Carmen is a designer and illustrator whose practice combines traditional craft with a modern sense of composition and color. From her studio in Madrid, she works across two areas: hand-marbled papers and illustrations created with hand-carved rubber stamps that are later developed digitally. Both approaches share a focus on tactile process, material, and rhythm.
Her marbled pieces are made using gouache paint floated on the surface of water. With brushes and combs, she guides pigment into organic formations and transfers each pattern onto paper by hand. The process produces fluid, dreamlike results that are always unique. The balance of color and movement in each work reflects the natural tension between control and spontaneity.
With nearly two decades of experience in graphic design and art direction for publications such as Vogue, Elle, and Marie Claire, Carmen brings a refined visual understanding to her handmade work. Her imagery reveals a sense of structure and clarity shaped by years of creative direction and collaboration.
Her marbled papers form The Marbled Collection at The Design Craft, where the focus is on craftsmanship, texture, and the beauty of handmade work.
