The Language of Color

A tool for identifying color with precision, context, and history

Color Index is a new tool for designers, artists, writers, and anyone who works with color. Upload an image, click anywhere, and get:

  • Precise and descriptive color naming

  • HEX, RGB, and CMYK values

  • Historical and cultural background

It was built from a recurring challenge in my own creative practice: the need to describe colors clearly and accurately, whether writing product copy, refining a brand palette, or referencing visual work. And from a long-standing interest in the language of color itself.

Color Index offers names that are clear and informed, you’ll see not just "green" but viridianolive, or celadon, each with a history and tone of its own. It’s especially useful for designers and interior stylists, but also for writers describing visual scenes.

Created as a practical reference tool, it’s also a small celebration of the richness of color and the role it plays in language, art, and design.

How to Use Color Index

Color Index is built for creative professionals, but it’s also simple enough for anyone curious about color. Here are a few ways it can be useful:

  • Product Designers & Brand Creators
Choose color names that are specific and memorable. Use references like ash bluesoft clay, or viridian instead of vague terms like "green" or "neutral."

  • Interior Designers & Stylists
Build palettes from inspiration photos and match colors across materials. Use historical references to guide tone and mood.

  • Writers & Content Creators
Bring visual detail to life in your writing. Swap "blue" for indigocerulean, or Prussian blue, depending on the atmosphere you want.

  • Artists & Art Directors
Explore color lineage across eras. Use the historical context to tie visual themes together.

  • Anyone Naming a Product
Whether it’s a candle, nail polish, furniture finish, or textile, descriptive names add polish and professionalism.

This is the first in a series of tools and resources from The Design Craft focused on creative clarity, education, and utility.
